Vector Map of Creation
« on: December 02, 2006, 11:32:32 AM »
For various reasons, I decided to create a vector-based map of creation in SVG. Mainly, I'm using the excellent maps done by Stephen Lea "Stephenls" Sheppard. Naturally, I won't own the copyright to the map, that is White Wolf's domain, but I have a couple of reasons to to it.

The first is just because SVG scales much better than raster images. Stephenls' images are beautiful, pure and simple. I'm creating something with a different focus, mainly in a top-down orientation, without the pretties. For me, I like maps done in the same style as the World Reference Atlas done by Dorling Kindersley.

I'm also doing this to help work out the ideas for my own map creation, which I want to do for my new fantasy world, Fedora, and maybe even Itrifore, depending on fightertype. But, that is much further down the line than this.

With some code fragments I found, I might be also able to use this map and add Sepia Throne-specific elements while retaining a "pristine" copy of Creation. With our recent request to use the canon map, I figured this was a pretty good idea.

Now, for the map itself. The only bits I have now are the coastline pretty much drawn out. I also have the beginning of the ocean depths, you can see that on the left hand side near the top. There are going to be 10 different shades of water, which should make it look pretty decent once I'm done. Likewise, there will be 10 elevation heights.

Another map. At this point, I think I got the basic water depth stuff done. I'm starting with the terrain, then with elevation which will make the terrain look a lot better looking.

Elevations. I finished up with the elevation map for Creation. Most of the elevations on the right-hand side are completely made up, I put them in because it seemed too "flat" to me. It also kind implies there is a slow slope in Creation from the right to the left. For those who are curious, I created the program in Inkscape which is a free vector graphic program that has some really nice features. There is a Windows-version for those who want to play with the map and/or add things they feel are appropriate.

I'm probably going to do Shadowlands and/or Celestial Gates before I start the task of doing cities, forts, manses, demenses, etc.

Lots of more work. I think all the cities are in now. Just a few more things before I'll separate from stephen's map and start working on the new content introduced by second edition.

Going with my latest change in direction, I have an online version of the map at:

  http://mfgames.com/exalted/map/
  http://sepia.mfgames.com/map/

The difference between the two is that the Sepia map has a few additional locations specific to the game at hand.
